Advanced Manufacturing & Engineering

The importance of the Advanced Manufacturing & Engineering sector is recognised here, with priority being given to developing science and enterprise parks at Loughborough University and MIRA Technology Park.

The city and county recognises the importance of the manufacturing sector, and its long history of engineering, shoemaking and hosiery production has resulted in today’s diverse range of engineering skills that are used to produce a number of high quality products.

Leicester and Leicestershire’s economy is worth £19.4 billion, the largest in the East Midlands, providing 435,000 jobs through 33,000 trading businesses, many of which are in the manufacturing sector. With its central geographic location and excellent transport links, our area is home to a diverse range of businesses in this sector such as Brush and Caterpillar; many companies in non-engineering sectors also use advanced manufacturing, such as Walkers snack foods and Sofidel tissue paper.

The area’s history of production in textiles, footwear, food, agriculture, and aerospace has contributed to a wealth of expertise which has developed over centuries. Leicester and Leicestershire has leading academic research and innovation facilities such as Loughborough, Leicester and De Montfort universities, specialist sites such as MIRA, Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC), and numerous colleges.
